Overhead crane workshop requirements cannot be defined by crane capacity alone. A workshop supplier needs the crane manufacturer’s geometry, wheel reactions, operating classification and clearance information before the crane-supporting structure can be finalized.
The practical goal is to make the crane data, production layout and steel building drawings agree before fabrication. If one team is working from “10-ton crane” while another is working from an actual crane general-arrangement drawing, the project can appear coordinated while critical inputs are still missing.

Crane capacity is only the first line of the design brief
A rated lifting capacity tells the project team what load the crane is intended to lift, but it does not define the reactions delivered to the runway or the space occupied by the crane. Two cranes with the same rated capacity can have different bridge weights, wheel arrangements, se extiende, approach dimensions and duty classifications.
Ask the selected crane manufacturer or supplier for a current general-arrangement drawing and the design information issued for the building interface. Konecranes’ crane-data portal, Por ejemplo, states that crane space requirements, wheel loads and drawings are used by metal-building manufacturers as inputs for building dimensioning. The exact document names vary by supplier, so request the project-specific data rather than relying on a generic catalogue page.
| Crane data to request | Why the building team needs it | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Rated load and crane type | Defines the selected lifting system and the basic equipment arrangement | Crane quotation and general-arrangement drawing |
| Luz de grúa | Coordinates the distance between runway rails and the workshop structural layout | Crane manufacturer |
| Bridge and trolley self-weight | Forms part of the equipment actions that must be considered with the lifted load | Crane manufacturer |
| Maximum and minimum wheel reactions | Provides project-specific reactions for runway beams, paréntesis, columnas y cimientos | Crane manufacturer’s design data |
| Wheel spacing and number of wheels | Shows where reactions act along the runway and how they travel through the support system | Crane general-arrangement drawing |
| Horizontal design forces, where applicable | Supports the engineer’s assessment of lateral actions and their load path | Crane manufacturer and applicable design criteria |
| Rail size or rail interface | Coordinates the crane runway beam, rail fixing and installation details | Crane manufacturer |
| Top-of-rail elevation | Links lifting height, crane envelope and the workshop vertical geometry | Coordinated crane and building drawings |
| Hook approaches and upper clearances | Shows where the hook can reach and the space needed around the bridge, trolley and roof structure | Crane general-arrangement drawing |
| Duty classification and operating pattern | Describes how intensively the equipment is expected to operate and supports structural design criteria | Crane manufacturer and owner’s operating brief |

Cargas de ruedas, operating duty and repeated crane actions need project data
The crane runway does not carry only the lifted load. The crane bridge, trolley, lifted load and operating actions are transmitted through the wheels into the runway system. That is why a building supplier should work with manufacturer-issued wheel reactions and the project’s applicable structural criteria rather than estimate runway loads from rated tonnage.
Duty classification also matters because crane-supporting structures can be subjected to repeated loading. Konecranes’ crane-selection guidance treats duty classification as an important selection input tied to the intended service, mientras AISC’s industrial-building guidance identifies fatigue, serviceability and crane-runway behavior as specific considerations for buildings with overhead cranes. The applicable classification system and design standard should be confirmed for the project location.
Information from the crane side
- Selected crane type and rated capacity
- Bridge, trolley and hoist arrangement
- Wheel reactions and wheel spacing
- Duty or service classification
- Travel and braking data required by the design criteria
- Rail and end-stop interface information
Information from the workshop side
- Project location and applicable design basis
- Workshop length, width and structural grid
- Production zones and material-flow routes
- Required crane runway length
- Future crane or capacity provisions, if genuinely required
- Foundation and soil information available to the local engineer
The structural engineer determines how these inputs are used in the building design. Blog guidance cannot replace the project calculations, and a crane supplier’s data sheet does not by itself approve the supporting building structure.
Coordinate rail elevation, lifting height and the complete crane envelope
“Workshop eave height” and “crane lifting height” are not interchangeable dimensions. The crane manufacturer normally defines hook travel and equipment geometry from its own reference points, while the building drawings define roof structure, ancas, bracing and other obstructions. The two sets of references need to be placed on the same section drawing.
Start with the operating task: what must be lifted, from which pickup level, to which destination, and what must the load clear during movement? Then coordinate the required hook position with the crane bridge depth, trolley arrangement, runway rail elevation and the lowest roof or service obstruction.
| Vertical item | Question to resolve | Who should confirm it |
|---|---|---|
| Altura requerida del gancho | What is the highest hook position needed for the actual lifting task? | Owner and crane supplier |
| Top-of-rail elevation | Where must the runway rail sit relative to the finished floor? | Crane and building teams |
| Crane headroom | What space does the crane require above the rail and during operation? | Crane manufacturer |
| Roof-structure clearance | Do rafters, ancas, bracing or connections intrude into the required crane envelope? | Building structural engineer |
| Services and maintenance access | Do lights, conductos, bandejas de cables, platforms or access zones conflict with crane travel? | Relevant specialist designers |
Do not raise the entire workshop automatically because one vertical dimension is uncertain. First identify the controlling location and confirm whether the conflict belongs to the crane geometry, the structural frame, a service route or the operating brief.
Plan the runway around production flow, doors and structural bracing
An overhead crane is part of the production layout, not an isolated piece of equipment. Its runway length, hook approaches and lifting zones should match where materials arrive, where they are processed and where the lifted items need to be placed.
Mark the crane coverage on the same plan as machines, assembly bays, áreas de almacenamiento, truck access and large doors. A hook that cannot reach the intended loading or maintenance position may leave a practical gap even when the crane technically spans the workshop.
Check the runway ends and hook approaches
Crane end carriages, buffers and end stops occupy space near the ends of the runway. The trolley and hook also have approach limits near the runway sides. Ask the crane supplier to show these limits on the general-arrangement drawing and compare them with the actual pickup and set-down positions.
Check columns, bracing and door openings together
Large equipment doors and crane-supported bays often compete for the same wall and frame locations. Bracing cannot simply be removed to create an opening, and a door position should not be frozen without reviewing the structural stability system. Coordinate the production layout before shop drawings are released.
Record future-crane requirements as a real design case
If the owner expects a second crane or a future capacity increase, state exactly what is being reserved. “Crane-ready” is too vague unless the assumed crane type, reacciones, runway geometry and operating conditions are recorded and included in the engineering review. A future change may still require reassessment.

Define who supplies the crane, runway and building interfaces
One of the easiest ways to create a quotation gap is to use the phrase “with overhead crane” without defining the supply boundary. The workshop steel package, crane equipment, runway rail, electrical system, foundations and installation can be supplied by different parties.
| Artículo | Scope question to put in the quotation | Coordination evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Main workshop frame | Are the columns and bracing designed for the confirmed crane-support reactions? | Approved structural drawings and design basis |
| Crane runway beams and brackets | Are these included in the steel building package? | Member schedule and drawings |
| Runway rails and rail fixings | Who supplies the rail, clips, pads or other fixing system? | Crane/runway interface detail |
| Bridge crane, trolley and hoist | Is the lifting equipment supplied separately by the crane vendor? | Crane quotation and GA drawing |
| Power supply and conductor system | Who provides the electrical feed and crane electrification? | Electrical scope and crane supplier requirements |
| End stops and buffers | Which party designs and supplies each component at the runway ends? | Runway-end detail and equipment schedule |
| Cimientos | Who designs the concrete foundations using the final building reactions and soil information? | Foundation design responsibility matrix |
| Crane installation and commissioning | Who erects, aligns, tests and commissions the crane and runway system? | Installation scope and local compliance plan |
Bingfa’s building scope can be discussed around the confirmed project requirements, including the main steel frame, crane-support steel where agreed, secondary steel and the roof and wall cladding system. The crane equipment and other specialist systems should be identified separately unless they are expressly included in the project quotation.

Overhead crane workshop questions from buyers
Is crane capacity enough for a steel workshop quotation?
It can be enough for an early budget discussion, but not for final crane-support design. The building team should obtain the selected crane’s geometry, wheel reactions, wheel spacing, rail information, duty data and clearance requirements before structural approval.
Who should provide the maximum wheel loads?
The selected crane manufacturer or supplier should provide the project-specific crane reactions used for the building interface. The structural engineer then applies the applicable design criteria to the supporting structure.
Does a 10-ton crane always need the same runway beam?
No. Rated capacity alone does not define the bridge weight, wheel arrangement, tramo de grúa, runway spacing, duty or structural design criteria. Those inputs can change the required runway and support system.
How do I choose the workshop height for an overhead crane?
Start with the required lifting task and hook position, then coordinate the crane headroom and top-of-rail elevation with rafters, ancas, bracing and services. Do not use eave height as a substitute for this coordinated section.
Can the crane be selected after the steel workshop is fabricated?
That can create major coordination risk because the supporting steel may already be fixed before the final reactions and geometry are known. If crane selection must remain open, the design basis and provisional limits need to be explicitly agreed and later verified before use.
Should I plan for a future second crane now?
If future crane use is a real requirement, provide an explicit future design case for engineering review. Do not rely on a general “future crane” note without defined assumptions, because later equipment may have different loads and geometry.
